2008 Schuylkill Chapter #25 Scholar Athletes

BLUE MOUNTAIN
Matthew E. Stankiewitch - 6’4”, 288 lbs. Offensive & Defensive Tackle. A three-year starter for the Eagles. All State 2006 (2nd) & 2007 (1st) & a 2007 All-Anthracite Player of the Year & All-Conference Lineman of the Year. Played in ESPN Under Armor All American Game in Florida & was named to Big 33 & Channel 16 Dream Teams. Matthew is a member of the National Honor Society & Social Studies Honor Society. He is in the top 10% of his class & expects to attend Penn State University on a full athletic scholarship. A major contributor in the Eagles District XI Championship season.

MAHANOY AREA
Ryan F. Herring - 5’11”, 190lbs. Fullback & Linebacker. A three-year starter & Team Captain who led the Golden Bears in tackles the past two
seasons. All-Anthracite (2nd) Linebacker & Running back & 2nd Team All County-North (2nd) Linebacker. He Wrestled three years & played Baseball four years. He is a member of the National Honor Society & Student Council. Ryan is in the top 15% of his class & is considering Kutztown University to further his education. He is a youth sports & an American Cancer Society volunteer. Ryan is an outstanding leader with instinctive play making ability on the field.

Christopher R. Fadule - 5’10”, 170lbs. Wide Receiver & Defensive Back. A two-year starter for Bishop Hafey who transitioned well
to the Marian Colts starting lineup in 2007. A 2005 & 2007 Standard Speaker All Area (2nd) Wide Receiver. Schuylkill County Coaches (HM) & Anthracite Football League All-Star (HM). He played Basketball for three years & Tennis for two years. Christopher is a member of the National Honor Society & Spanish Honor Society & has been in the advanced academic program throughout his High School career. He is in the Top 5% of his class. Christopher was a valuable force on the 2007 Marian Colts team.

Jeffrey P. Marteslo - 6’2”, 205lbs. Defensive End & Offensive Tackle. A two-year starter
for the Battlin’ Miners. A 2007Anthracite Football League All-Star (1st), a 2007 All County (1st), & All Conference (1st) in 2007. Jeffrey participated in Track & Field for four years. He is ranked in the top 5% of his class & is considering Lebanon Valley & the University of Scranton as possible schools to further his education. He is a member of the National Honor Society, a Youth Leadership Conference Representative, a Church Alter Server, & an Adopt a Resident participant. Jeff is a leader & a fantastic role model for younger players at Minersville Area.

Michael J. Greco - 6’1”, 215lbs. Offensive Guard & Defensive Tackle. A two-year starter & a Team Captain for the Green Wave. An All-American Conference All Star (2nd) in 2006 & 2007. Michael participated in Track & Field for four years & is ranked 2nd in his class. He is a member of the National Honor Society & National High School Scholars & is listed on the National Honor Roll. Michael is a Meals-on-Wheels, Pottsville Hospital, & Relay for Life volunteer. He is considering Villanova University, St Joseph’s University, & the University of Scranton as possible college options. Michael is an exceptional student with a focus on leadership & service.

NORTH SCHUYLKILL
Richard E. Wetzel - 6’3”, 240lbs. Offensive Center & Guard & Defensive Lineman. A three-year starter who led by example on & off the gridiron. Richard specialized in blocking & was a deep snapper for the Spartans. He participated in Wrestling for four years. Richard is active in church affairs,
participated in civil war re-enactments, & is an Eagle Scout. He is in the top half of his class & is exploring potential college options. A dedicated young man who puts his heart into everything that he does.

PANTHER VALLEY
Christopher J. Haggard - 5’9”, 131 lbs. Quarterback, Wing Back, & Defensive Back. A four-year member & two-year starter for the Panthers
football team. He participated in Baseball & Track & Field. Christopher is in the top 10% of his class & is a member of the National Honor Society & JROTC where he is Cadet Battalion Commander. He has been a Student Council Representative for four years. Christopher has accepted a full Army JROTC Scholarship to Niagara University. He has provided dedicated service to his school & community.

PINE GROVE AREA
David T. Russell - 6’5”, 275lbs. Offensive &
Defensive Tackle. A four-year member & three-year starter for the Cardinals. All-County in 2006 (1st) & 2007 (2nd). Participated in Track & Field for four years & is a member of the Varsity & History Clubs. David is in the Top 5% of his class & is a National Honor Society President. He is considering Penn State University & the Eberly College of Science as collegiate options. He was a four-year member of the Marching & Concert bands & a Student Council officer. A well-rounded athlete who is committed to service in his school & community.

POTTSVILLE AREA
Jared J. Cicero - 5’9”, 172lbs. Defensive Back & Wing Back. A four-year member & two-year starter for the Crimson Tide. All County (HM) in 2007. Jared participated in Baseball while maintaining a rigorous academic schedule that included Advanced Geometry, Biology, & Chemistry. He is in the Top 10% of his class & is considering West Virginia University, Wilkes University, & Lebanon Valley College among his future educational options. The Crimson Tide’s leading receiver who’s “toughness” became almost legendary at Pottsville.

Andrew P. Fink - 5’9”, 190lbs. Quarterback & Safety. A four-year member & two-year starter for
the Hurricanes gridiron team. All County (1st) & All Anthracite (1st) in 2007. He participated in Baseball for four years. Andrew is a National Honor Society member & a Midget Football & Teener League Baseball volunteer. He is ranked in the top 15 % of his class & is considering Dickinson College to advance his education. A Team Captain that has been a great role model for younger players in the Hurricane’s program.

W. Mankiewicz - 6’2”, 200lbs. Defensive End & Tight End. A four-year member & three-year starter for the Blue Devils. All Area (1st) in 2006 & 2007 & All Anthracite (1st) in 2007. He participated in Basketball for four years & Track & Field for three years. He is a member of the National Honor Society & a Student Council member. Matthew is ranked in the Top 10% of his class. He is considering King’s College & Wilkes University as possible college options. A dedicated athlete who has demonstrated outstanding character & leadership for younger players.

TAMAQUA AREA
Travers L. Schmidt - 6’, 195lbs. Quarterback, Fullback & Linebacker. A four-
year starter who led the Blue Raiders team in tackles, forced fumbles, & recoveries. A Schuylkill County Coaches All Star (1st) who won co-MVP honors on defense. Named to the All Anthracite, Times News, & Hazelton Standard Speaker All-Star teams. Travers participated in Baseball three years & Swimming for four years. He is an active member of his church & volunteered for the American Cancer Society, the Little Schuylkill Conservation Club, & the Meals-on-Wheels program. Travers is ranks 2nd in his class & committed to play football at Cornell University. An exceptional student athlete with a strong work ethic.

Andrew J. Oxenrider - 5’10”, 165lbs. Quarterback, Running Back, & Linebacker. A four-year
starter for the Bulldogs. A 2007 Twin Valley Conference 2nd All Stars (2nd). He participated in Wrestling for four years. Andrew is in the top third of his class a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Youth Leadership Program, & a Wendy’s Heisman Award recipient. He is involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Students Against Dangerous Decisions (SADD), & the Future Famers of America (FFA) programs. Andrew is considering Kutztown University & Lebanon Valley College as potential college options. A mature individual with a solid character who has the utmost level of integrity.

WILLIAMS VALLEY
Paul R. helski - 5’10”, 160lbs. Quarterback. A four-year member & a three-year starter for the Vikings gridiron team. Paul participated in Baseball three years. A natural leader on & off the football field who is ranked in the top half of his class. Paul is considering Lycoming College, Penn State University, & Widener University among possible college options. A good student who always has a positive attitude & a calm composure.
