2011 Schuylkill Chapter #25 Scholar Athletes

Blue Mountain

Matthew LaScala-6’0”, 183lbs. Wide Receiver and Safety. A three year member and a two year starter for the Eagles gridiron team. All Area (1st Team), Berks IC League All Star (1st Team), and a Schuylkill County All-Star. Played basketball for three years. Matthew ranks in the top 25% of his class. He is Vice-President of his class and a member of Student Council. He expects to further his education at Temple or Bloomsburg University. An unassuming leader among his peers both academically and athletically.

Mahanoy Area

Jordan Mroczka-5’11”, 170lbs. Quarterback, Running Back, and Free Safety. A four year member and three year starter for the Golden Bears. All County (2nd Team), All Area Reading Eagle (1st Team), Standard Speaker (1st Team), Republican Herald (2nd Team), and an Anthracite League All Star (1st Team). A four year member of the baseball team. National Honor Society Treasurer and the Class Secretary. He is a volunteer for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Meals on Wheels. Jordan ranks 9th in his class. A fierce competitor with a hardworking and confident attitude.

Marian Catholic 

Dominick Richards-6’6”, 225lbs. Tight End and Defensive End.  A four year starter and team captain for the Marian Colts. A Hazelton Standard Speaker (1st Team) and a Times News (2nd Team) selections. A five position starter who played Tight End, Defensive Back, Wide Receiver, Quarterback, and Safety. He earned academic and athletic scholarship offers from 5 universities. He will attend James Madison University. Dominick ranks in the top 10% of his class. He is a National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society member and a Eucharistic Minister. A gifted athlete with equally gifted academic aptitude.

Minersville Area 

Austin Schultz-5’10”, 165lbs. Fullback, Defensive Tackle and Guard. A four year member and two year starter for the Battling Miners.  Named as the team’s 2011 Most Valuable Defensive Player and a 2011 Iron Miner Award winner. Austin ranks 3rd in his class. He plans to attend Lebanon Valley College and qualifies for a Vickroy Scholarship. He is President of the National Honor Society and an Altar Server for St. Matthew’s Church. He is an intelligent player with a tireless work ethic.

Nativity BVM 

Thomas Leganza-6’3”, 195lbs. Quarterback, Defensive Safety, and a Long Snapper on Special Teams.  A team captain and a two year starter for the Green Wave. Thomas ranks in the top 2/3rd of his class. He played baseball for two years. He is a Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Walk volunteer. Thomas has been accepted at Kings College and Salva Regina University. A student athlete with a strong work ethic, excellent leadership skills and the drive to be successful.

North Schuylkill 

Edward Pavalko-6’1”, 235lbs. Fullback, Defensive End, and Linebacker.  A four year member and three year starter for the Spartans gridiron team. All League (1st Team), All County (1st Team), All Area (1st Team), All Anthracite (1st Team), and All State. A 2009 and 2010 WNEP Super 16 Dream Team Defensive Player of the Year selection. Times News, Reading Eagle, and WPPA/T-102 Player of the Year. A student athlete with character and dignity who leads by example. Edward ranks in the top 10% of his class. He plans to continue his football career and education at Colgate University.

Panther Valley 

John Owens-5’6”, 190lbs. Offensive Tackle and Defensive Tackle. A four year member and a one year starter for the Panther’s gridiron team. A recipient of the Delrose Sportsmanship Award.  John is ranks 2nd in his class. He is Student Council Vice President and a member of the National Honor Society. He is the host of a school radio show, the Panther Report, aired on WLSH radio. John plans to continue his studies at Drexel University and major in Business and Accounting. A confident and highly motivated student athlete.

Pine Grove Area 

Adam Soltys-5’11”, 215lbs. Defensive End and Offensive Guard. A team captain who was a four year member and a three year starter for the Cardinals. All-Conference (1st Team), All-County (1st Team), All-Area (1st Team), and a 2010 Mini-Maxwell Award recipient. A member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, and Future Business Leaders of America. Adam ranks 7th in his class. He plans to attend Lebanon Valley College. A humble, but exceptionally talented student athlete.

Pottsville Area 

Martin Melochick-6’0”, 210lbs. Offensive Tackle and Defensive Tackle. A three year member and one year starter for the Crimson Tide gridiron team. Martin ranks 6th in his class. He is President of the Spanish Club. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and Students Against Tobacco. A conscientious student athlete who is highly regarded by the coaches and faculty.

Schuylkill Haven Area 

Roy Bensinger-5’7”, 220lbs. Guard and Defensive Tackle. A four year member and two year starter for the Hurricane’s gridiron team.  An All County Honorable Mention at the Offensive Line position. He is a four year member of the baseball team. Roy ranks 2nd in his class and is a member of the National Honor Society and Academic Honor Guard. He has been accepted at Penn State University. He is President of his Class, President of Student Council and serves as a volunteer on the Veteran’s Day Committee. Roy is a hard working team player who is dedicated to his team, coaches, and the community.

Shenandoah Valley 

Adam Macker-6’2”, 225lbs. A four year member and a two year starter for the Blue Devils. Offensive Line. An Anthracite Football League (2nd Team) and Schuylkill County Coaches (1st Team North) selection. A Pottsville Republican-Herald All Area Honorable Mention pick. Adam is 3rd in his class. Played baseball for four years. He is considering Penn State and Wilkes Universities to further his education. A National Honor Society and Academic Bowl Team member. A model student athlete with outstanding character and leadership traits.

Tamaqua Area

Carl Wittig-5’11”, 180lbs. Offensive and Defensive Guard.  A four year member and three year starter for the Blue Raiders. All Area (HM) and an Anthracite League All Star (2nd Team). Recipient of the Thomas Butterworth Memorial Award. Carl ranks 6th in his class. A National Honor Society member and a member of the Spanish, English, and Science National Honor Societies. Carl has been accepted at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Meals on Wheels and Cancer Society volunteer. Carl is a hard worker with many talents and a great role model for his teammates.

Tri-Valley

John Slater-6’1”, 175lbs. Split End, Tight End, Free Safety, and Corner Back. A four year member and two year starter for the Bulldogs.  A team captain who was named the Bulldog Special Teams Player of the Year and a Twin Valley Conference All Star (1st Team). John ranks 8th in his class. He is National Honor Society President, Student Council Treasurer, and is a volunteer for the SPCA and SKIP. A mature individual with a solid character and the utmost integrity.

Williams Valley

Todd Schorr-6’1”, 180lbs. Tight End and Defensive End.  A team captain who was a four year member and two year starter for the Vikings. He was among the league leaders in tackles. A Twin Valley Conference All Star (1st Team), a Southern Area All Star (HM), and a 4th team All-State selection. He participated in baseball and wrestling. Todd ranks 7th in his class. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is Class Treasurer. He expects to continue his education at either Kutztown or Bloomsburg University. Todd is known for his positive attitude and ability to lead by example.
