2009 Schuylkill Chapter #25 Scholar Athletes

BLUE MOUNTAIN
Keith R. Graeff Jr.-6’3”, 250lbs. Offensive and Defensive Tackle. A Team Captain and two-year starter for the Eagles gridiron team. A 2008 1st Team All County, 1st Team All IC Section I, and the All Anthracite Lineman of the Year. Keith is a member of the Science and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Societies. He is in the top 10% of his class and is considering John Hopkins and Wilkes Universities to further his education. A key member of the Eagles 2007 District XI Championship Team.  A leader on the field and in the school community.

MAHANOY AREA

Kyle M. Sisak-6’0”, 210lbs. Running Back and Outside Linebacker. The Golden Bears team rushing leader for two consecutive years.  T-102 Player of the Week, 2nd Team All County selection, and named to the All Anthracite All Star Team. Kyle was a four year starter who also played basketball three years. He is ranked in the top half of his class and plans to attend Bloomsburg University. A Student Council member who is respectful to his teachers and peers and is a true leader on the field.

MARIAN CATHOLIC

Shawn M. Hutta-6’0”, 185lbs. Wide Receiver and Defensive Back. A four year member and three year starter for the Colts. A 2nd Team Standard Speaker All Star selection who was also a four year member of the track and field program. Shawn ranked in the top 20% of his class and is considered to be a very conscientious, industrious, creative, and responsible young man. He is noted as a speedy, big play receiver and he was a solid return man. Shawn plans to attend MMI Technical School.

MINERSVILLE AREA

Zachary Bitting-5’7”, 155lbs. Wide Receiver/Running Back and Defensive Back. A four year member and two year starter for the Battlin’ Miners squad. A 1st Team All League, 1st Team SCFCA South Team selection, and a 2nd Team All Area selection. A Team Captain and punter who is also a fantastic role model for younger players. He played baseball four years and is a member of the SADD program. Zachary is ranked in the top 25% of his class and is considering several universities to further his education.

NATIVITY BVM

Christopher J. Halcovage-6’0”, 176lbs. Quarterback, Wide Receiver, Running Back, Defensive Back , and Kicker. A three year starter for the Green Wave football team who also played soccer, basketball, and baseball. Named the Pottsville Lions MVP and the All American Conference MVP. He was a T-102 Player of the Week who was also named to the All Area 1st Team as punter. He stands in the top 1/3 of his class and is considering Penn State or West Virgina University to continue his academics. A good leader with outstanding athletic ability.

NORTH SCHUYLKILL

Jared C. Whitecavage-6’1”, 200lbs. Fullback and Linebacker. A four year member and “tough as nails” starter for the Spartans.  Named Defensive Player of the Year in the Anthracite League. Selected to the 1st Team SCCA, 1st Team Shamokin News All Area Football Team, and 1st Team All Anthracite Conference. Jared is considering Delaware Valley College among several others to further his education. A dedicated and determined leader.

PANTHER VALLEY

Brandon R. Heffelfinger-5’7”, 135lbs. Wide Receiver, Running Back, and Defensive Back. A five year team member and three year starter for the Panthers. A 2008 Anthracite Sportsmanship Award recipient who was known for his speed and knowledge of the game. Participated in wrestling, baseball and track and field. Brandon is ranked in the top 15% of his class and is considering York College or East Stroudsburg University. A National Honor Society and Church Youth Group member. Considered by his peers and coaches as a man of action who strives to meet challenges.

PINE GROVE AREA

Jeffery C. Zimmerman Jr.-6’0”, 205lbs. Center and Defensive End. A three year starter for the Cardinals. Twin Valley Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year, All Conference 1st Team DE, All Conference 1st Team Center, All County 1st Team Center, and All Area 1st Team Offensive Lineman. A National Honor Society member and Vice President of Student Council and FBLA. Jeffery is ranked in the top 5% of his class and is considering Lebanon Valley College to further his education. A positive and respected student and member of the Cardinals gridiron program.

POTTSVILLE AREA

Joshua J. Poda-5’8”, 162lbs. Quarterback, Wingback, and Halfback. A four year member and two year starter who was named to the 1st Team All Anthracite, 1st Team All County, 2nd Team All Berks, and 1st Team All Area squads. He was named the Pottsville Lions Club MVP. Joshau played baseball and is a member of SADD, the Leo Club, and Student Council. He is ranked in the top 10% of his class and is considering Wilkes University among other colleges to further his education.  A fierce competitor with a passion for the game.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN AREA

Zachary A. Barket-5’10”, 200lbs. Running Back and Linebacker. A four year member and starter for the Hurricanes. 1st Team All County, All Area, and All Anthracite. All State Player of the Year, PA Gatorade Player of the Year, PA Old Spice Player of the Year, and named “Mister Football” by the PA Football News. Zachary is ranked in the top 20% of his class and will enter Lehigh University to begin his collegiate career. A National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society member. Attracted a positive national exposure for “Coal Region” football.

SHENANDOAH VALLEY

Paul J. Roller-6’0”, 200lbs. Tight End and Defensive End. A four year member and two year starter for the Blue Devil’s squad. The 2008 James Rhoades MVP Award recipient and an AFL 2nd Team selection at Tight End. He participated in baseball and basketball, Drama Club and Student Council. Paul is ranked in the top 10% of his class and is considering East Stroudsburg University and Shippensburg University among his college options. A mature and dedicated student athlete who promotes great citizenship and sportsmanship.

TAMAQUA AREA

Tyler D. Kunkel-5’11”, 210lbs. Tight End, Linebacker, and Defensive End. A three year member and two year starter for the Blue Raiders. A 2008 1st Team All Anthracite, and 1st Team Times News, Republican Herald, and Standard Speaker All Star selection . Tamaqua’s 2008 Anthracite Sportsmanship Award recipient. A member of the Leadership Council, National, Spanish, English, and Science Honor Societies. Tyler is ranked in the top 15% of his class and will attend Widener University on a scholarship. A hard worker and a strong role model for underclassmen.

Tri-Valley

Zachary T. Hubler-6’2”, 205lbs. Wide Receiver, Defensive Back, and Kicker. A four year member and two year starter for the Bulldogs. A 2nd Team All State selection. 1st Team Reading Eagle, Upper Dauphin Sentinel, Twin Valley Conference, and Republican Herald selection. A PA Football News, Eastern PA Football, and Schuylkill County 2nd Team selection. He is ranked in the top 20% of his class and is considering Rutgers and Syracuse universities, among others, to continue his education. Zachary is a member of the SADD and Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs. A tremendous well rounded athlete.

WILLIAMS VALLEY

John A. Brennan Jr.-5’9”, 190lbs. Center, Defensive Tackle,  and Linebacker. A four year member and starter for the Vikings. A 2nd Team TVC and a 1st Team All Sentinel selection. Known for his foot speed and balance and knowledge of the game. He participated in baseball, and is a member of the Enrichment, Drama, and Yearbook Clubs. He is president of the National Honor Society and the Senior Class. John is ranked in the top 15% of his class and has been accepted at Shippensburg University. A leader and an excellent role model for others.
